PRE-GRINDING & DEBURRING

Burr formation is usually unavoidable in laser-, plasma-, and oxy-fuel-cutting, as well as stamped, sheet metal parts. This so-called primary burr is a material formation at the cut edge of components that protrudes beyond the actual workpiece contour and can impair dimensional accuracy and further processing. Further deviations from the target state can result, for example, from spatter on the component surface caused by laser cutting, unevenness, or surface scaling.
A byproduct of primary burr removal is the so-called secondary burr. This extends towards the component surface and arises from insufficient material removal combined with the deformation of the remaining material. Grinding is typically used to remove primary burrs, spatter, unevenness, and, if applicable, scale. In addition to primary burr removal, minimizing secondary burr formation is also a key focus. Special carrier systems for grinding belts, discs, or sheets are required to remove these undesirable secondary features from the sheet metal without leaving any residue.
