Removing slag
Plasma and oxyfuel cutting processes inevitably result in significant melting. The molten material is forced out of the kerf by the cutting jet and settles on the underside of the component. There, it solidifies as slag. This slag appears on both internal and external contours and must be removed for cost-effective and high-quality further processing.
Common manual methods for deslagging include chipping with a hammer and chisel or using an angle grinder. However, these methods are time-consuming and often do not produce reproducible results.
In machining, excess material buildup can be reduced by grinding with a soft contact roller. A particularly effective industrial method is chipping using a deslagging brush. This brush consists of numerous flexibly mounted pins that target and chip away the slag without damaging the base material.
Depending on the material and toughness of the slag, it can be advantageous to choose between different pin hardness grades. Four hardness grades are available in various diameters. The pins are mounted differently and are interchangeable. This allows the machining intensity to be precisely adjusted to the material, component geometry, and slag hardness – from particularly gentle to maximum aggressive.
