boeck visits real sheet metal workers: Milanese industrial technology

In this installment of our video series "boeck visits real sheet metal workers," Marc Böck travels to Nattheim to visit the Mailänder company. There, he is welcomed by Michael Mailänder, the company's managing director. The 20-person group of companies operates in the metalworking industry and is divided into two divisions: MLT (Mailänder Lasertechnik), specializing in custom laser cutting and laser welding according to customer specifications, and MIS (Mailänder Industrieservice), which handles machine repairs, spare parts manufacturing, overhauls, and assembly work.

The foundation for the company was laid in 2016 in Michael's parents' garage. Just three years later, the first production hall was built, and in 2021, the first deburring machine, a LOEWER DiscMaster 4TD, arrived at Mailänder. This was primarily to save a significant amount of time in the deburring process, which had previously been done manually.

From the very beginning, Mailänder relied on deburring discs from boeck when they commissioned their LOEWER machine. Michael emphasizes that the results were consistently excellent, so there was never any reason not to use boeck products. The Swabian company faced particular challenges in the areas of tool changes and the demanding edge rounding required on especially thick sheet metal pieces.

The deburring plates in detail

Specifically, Mailänder opted for the HERO deburring disc. This version enables extremely tight radii on the workpiece and also allows for high feed rates. It boasts a high abrasive density and flexibility. Compared to the other two versions, the HERO deburring disc offers the highest material removal rate and produces the tightest edge radii, both on external edges and on bores and cutouts. Furthermore, it differs from the STANDARD and PROFESSIONAL versions in its material composition. While the other two use a combination of abrasive cloth and abrasive fleece, the HERO disc is equipped with laser-cut abrasive cloth flaps. During the manufacturing process, the laser cuts a finger-like structure into the cloth, allowing for a significantly higher fabric density.

For those who find this performance level too high, the previously mentioned STANDARD or PROFESSIONAL deburring discs are also available. The STANDARD disc features a single row of abrasive and is best suited for secondary burrs and light edge rounding. The PROFESSIONAL version, on the other hand, has a double row of abrasive, resulting in a more even pressure distribution on the workpiece. This allows for higher feed rates or more intensive edge rounding.

For manufacturers looking to reduce costs without sacrificing quality, there's often only one lever to pull: shorter setup times. With the boeck QUICK quick-clamping system, our tools – from slag hammer brushes and hook-and-loop foam backings to deburring discs, deburring blocks, and oxide brushes – can be changed in seconds. This saves valuable time and ensures maximum efficiency in the deburring process.

Whether using deburring machines with planetary head systems and deburring discs or with power belt systems and deburring blocks – our quick-release clamping system adapts flexibly. The adapter plate, milled from aluminum, is mounted once; after that, the tools simply screw or click into the quick-release fastener. This eliminates the need for mounting screws or bolts, allowing for high-speed tool changes.

Mailänder also relies on this technology. Managing Director Michael Mailänder emphasizes that the HERO deburring discs are perfectly suited for their sheet metal parts and deliver precisely the desired results. The quick and easy tool change with the Quick quick-clamping system significantly simplifies the entire process.

The partnership between boeck and Mailänder is based on a friendly and familial relationship. Michael praises the prompt communication and direct advice regarding deburring processes and the product range. This close collaboration has also created a reciprocal relationship: While Mailänder relies on boeck tools, boeck sources sheet metal for its own machine manufacturing directly from Mailänder. A true partnership built on innovation and mutual trust.
