Innovative quick clamping system reduces setup times by up to 80 percent

Marc Böck, Managing Director of boeck GmbH, Cor Schoonbeek, Technical Sales at Metaaltechniek Handelsonderneming BV, and René Kruidhof, Plant Manager at Blokland Metalbewerking BV, (from left) together optimized the deburring processes at Blockland – with fantastic results.

Companies seeking to reduce manufacturing costs without compromising quality often have only one lever to pull: shorter process times. In practical terms, this means reducing setup times. Blokland Metalbewerking BV has achieved remarkable results in terms of non-productive time by switching to boeck's deburring block system for deburring and edge rounding of its steel and stainless steel semi-finished products. The Dutch company saves up to 80 percent on setup times, requires fewer tools, and has further improved the quality of its deburred sheets.

In Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Netherlands, everything revolves around metal. For over 50 years, Blokland Metalworking BV, based there, has been known as a specialist in the production of high-quality semi-finished products made from ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Tube laser cutting, laser and waterjet cutting, punching, edge bending, milling, turning, and assembly – thanks to its modern, highly automated machinery, the company can flexibly meet all requirements. To ensure the high quality of the metal parts, deburring and edge rounding are important steps in Blokland's production process. „Our customers – especially those in the food industry – have extremely high demands when it comes to edge rounding of their sheet metal parts. With our two LISSMAC SBM-L 1500 deburring machines, we can confidently meet these requirements. We use one machine for steel and the other for stainless steel. We deburr approximately 50 tons of stainless steel sheets per month with them. Maximum productivity is absolutely essential in this environment.“, according to René Kruidhof, plant manager at Blokland Metalbewerking BV. „The advantage of the LISSMAC machines is that we can machine all cutting contours simultaneously, top and bottom, in a single operation. This ensures efficient machining times and also precise and reproducible quality. The machines are perfect for our requirements, but we did see potential for optimization in the deburring tools. The extent of that potential ultimately impressed us.“

Combined expertise for the perfect solution

Seeking ways to further improve deburring and edge rounding on their two LISSMAC machines, Blokland turned to Metaaltechniek Handelsonderneming BV. This technical wholesaler from Amersfoort, Netherlands, has over 50 years of experience in grinding and polishing processes and works very closely with boeck GmbH in the Dutch market. The expert team led by engineers Marc and Jochen Böck passionately develops and produces customized tooling solutions for sheet metal deburring – from slag removal and pre-grinding to deburring, edge rounding, oxide removal, and surface finishing. This combined expertise in grinding and deburring technology provided Blokland with the perfect starting point.

The experts from boeck and Metaaltechniek Handelsonderneming are in constant communication about technical innovations and challenges. „The LISSMAC deburring machines operate with flexible deburring blocks on a power belt. It quickly became clear to us that the boeck system would bring enormous savings in setup time and also an improvement in performance for Blokland.“, Cor Schoonbeek, Technical Sales at Metaaltechniek Handelsonderneming BV, and Marc Böck, Managing Director of boeck GmbH, agree.

Deburring machines are perfectly suited to Blokland's requirements. Using deburring blocks from Boeck, the quality of edge rounding has been improved, setup times minimized, and tooling costs reduced.
Boeck has developed a universal deburring block system for LISSMAC and NS-MAQUINAS deburring machines. With a large portfolio of different tools, Boeck offers the right solution for a wide variety of applications.

Setup times at a minimum

To change the original LISSMAC tools, the machine operator must, after removing the four power belts – two for the top and two for the bottom – unscrew the old deburring blocks and screw the new ones back on individually. „"It takes quite a while until all the deburring blocks have been replaced."“, Marc Böck knows this. „"To drastically reduce this time for the user, we developed our quick-release clamping system. Base support blocks are already pre-mounted on our power belts. When changing tools, the red deburring blocks simply need to be clicked in or out. It only takes seconds."“

René Kruidhof is thrilled: „When the experts first presented the boeck deburring blocks to us, we were immediately enthusiastic. In operation, the system far exceeded our expectations. The innovative quick-clamping system allows us to change the deburring blocks in no time at all. This enables us to reduce setup times by almost 80 percent! That's fantastic! Not only do we minimize machine downtime, but our employees can now use the time saved for value-adding tasks.“

And that's not all: The constant disassembly and assembly of the deburring blocks puts significant stress on the bores in the power belts of the LISSMAC system, causing them to wear out. This means the belts need to be replaced regularly. The boeck system eliminates this wear completely. Furthermore, the boeck deburring blocks are slightly longer, so that approximately ten percent fewer tools are required compared to the original. „"This allows us to save costs directly, in addition to the setup times – and all with one system. That's something you have to see to believe."“, René Kruidhof is delighted.

Excellent Quality on top

Anyone who thinks Blokland might have to compromise on performance and quality with the Boeck deburring blocks is sorely mistaken. René Kruidhof explains: „"Boeck's tools are state-of-the-art. This ensures both long service life and consistently high performance. As a result, we were able to significantly improve the quality of sheet metal edge rounding while further reducing costs."“ In addition, boeck supports Blokland – as well as all customers – with its many years of expertise in choosing the right machine and tool parameters, such as cutting and feed speeds, in order to achieve the best possible results.

Marc Böck: „The LISSMAC machines present the tools with two particular challenges: Firstly, high material removal rates are required due to the relatively short contact zone of two 50 mm sections, and secondly, the kinematics of the deburring machine make it difficult to achieve a uniform edge rounding on the sheet metal edges. We have developed our deburring blocks specifically for these deburring machines and have a large portfolio to meet the various requirements.“

Large selection with short delivery times

Various designs are possible for standard deburring blocks: GREEN EDITION Due to its adaptability, it can be used for all types of sheet metal. While the BLUE EDITION It is used especially with stainless steel sheets. GREY EDITION Ideally suited for aluminum and plastic components. Both versions offer an additional highlight: thanks to the special grain geometry, the sheet metal surface acquires a glossy finish. The deburring blocks of the individual editions can also be equipped with a more powerful abrasive fabric. This results, for example, in greater edge rounding. Users achieve the highest possible material removal rate with the HERO deburring blocks. They consist purely of finger-structured abrasive fabric flaps and impress with their very hard backing material combined with extreme flexibility. This ensures the often-desired very high degree of edge rounding.

„"Whether standard or HERO version – we can also precisely tailor the deburring blocks to the specific application. This allows our customers, for example, to achieve the largest possible edge radii on sheet metal parts or high-speed deburring."“, “That’s something we’re really looking for,” adds Marc Böck. In addition to the innovative deburring block system, boeck GmbH also offers the appropriate abrasive belts for removing primary burrs for all LISSMAC machines. Users can choose from various grit sizes and a range of abrasives: for universal use, for a fine finish with high cutting performance, or for high material removal at low operating temperatures, long service life, and optimal surface quality. Whether it’s a deburring block or an abrasive belt – thanks to a coordinated production strategy and intelligent warehousing, boeck can deliver the right tool from stock in the shortest possible time.
