Maximum edge rounding in the shortest time
Smart, turnkey solutions for assembly and welding fixtures in special-purpose machine construction are the specialty of Fuchs Werkzeug- und Maschinenbau GmbH. From design and manufacturing to assembly, the Lebach-based company delivers high-quality machines and assemblies for the automotive, agricultural, construction machinery, and defense industries. „We typically use stainless steel sheets to build our fixtures, which we cut into suitable shapes using lasers or water jets. It's inevitable that this process will create burrs and sharp edges. To reduce the risk of injury during subsequent handling of the assemblies and to ensure their functionality, deburring is part of our standard procedures. Furthermore, a very high degree of edge rounding is often necessary on the sheet metal parts to meet our quality requirements,“ explains David Welter, Production Planner at Fuchs Werkzeug- und Maschinenbau GmbH.
Thanks to the three processing stations – a grinding unit followed by four oscillating brushes – various work steps such as deburring and edge rounding are possible in a single pass – and at high speed. „We didn’t just want to convert manual processing into a machine process; our focus was primarily on achieving very tight edge rounding in the shortest possible time while maintaining high working speed and feed rate,“ explains David Welter. „The Q-FIN machine is perfect for these requirements. We found the right tools, which deliver top performance in this extreme environment, in the HERO deburring discs from boeck.“
This is no coincidence, as the expert team around engineers Marc and Jochen Böck developed the HERO deburring discs precisely for such challenges. "Tailor-made tooling solutions for sheet metal deburring, from slag removal and pre-grinding to deburring, edge rounding, and oxide removal, all the way to surface finishing, are our passion – from development to production. The secret to the success of HERO deburring discs lies in their extremely high abrasive density combined with the exceptional flexibility of the abrasive material. To achieve this, boeck developed a new arrangement and slot structure for the abrasive flaps. This increases the active abrasive material many times over, thereby also boosting the performance potential of deburring machines.

At Fuchs, one of the challenges was the varying degrees of hardness of the burrs on the waterjet- and laser-cut components. That’s why we worked closely with Fuchs to precisely adjust the setting parameters.“ And the result is record-breaking: „We’re thrilled! They are well-suited for removing light primary and secondary burrs and for rounding sheet metal components. Thanks to their double-row design, they contain more abrasive material compared to other deburring discs and exhibit a very consistent pressure distribution. The deburring discs are available in various versions depending on the range of workpieces and the desired deburring or rounding result. To achieve the desired result more quickly, Fuchs uses the Blue Edition with the high-performance abrasive material, 3M Cubitron II.
