Faster to stronger edge rounding

Faster, better, stronger – mythical heroes, be it Heracles with his legendary physical strength, Lancelot as the shining knight at King Arthur's side, or Siegfried the dragon slayer, clearly stand out from the crowd. Thanks to their exceptional qualities, they are capable of extraordinary feats. The HERO deburring discs from boeck GmbH also achieve outstanding results: they ensure a very high degree of edge rounding in a very short time. The stainless steel experts at Eberhardt GmbH in Lichtenau can see for themselves every day that these discs live up to their name and have been able to significantly reduce their processing times.

To achieve the extreme edge rounding on the stainless steel components on the new PT 1350 grinding machine from WEBER, Eberhardt searched for suitable tools and found them in the HERO deburring discs from boeck.

From stainless steel sinks for sausage kitchens to 800 kg presses for industrial meat producers – Eberhardt GmbH develops and manufactures high-quality stainless steel products for meat processing plants. The family-owned company, with 65 employees, sells ham presses, smoking and cooking trolleys, shelving, and hygiene and wastewater technology made of stainless steel to over 100 countries.

To mark its 40th anniversary, Eberhardt invested in a fourth plant. To meet the demands of customized and flexible high-quality manufacturing, the new hall was equipped with state-of-the-art machinery featuring cutting-edge CNC technology. Among other things, the company acquired a WEBER PT 1350. This next-generation universal grinding machine is ideally suited for deburring, edge rounding, descaling, and surface grinding of thin or thick sheets. Up to five grinding stations enable all processing variations. "We are always committed to using the latest technologies for our customers. Therefore, we are constantly searching for optimal process solutions for our ever-expanding machinery – including for our new WEBER grinding and deburring machine. With boeck GmbH, we have found the ideal partner for the grinding and deburring tools," says Ralf Eberhardt, Head of Development at Eberhardt GmbH.

HERO masters high demands with flying colors

Eberhardt primarily processes V2A (1.4301) stainless steel for its high-quality products – but also higher-alloy materials such as V4A (1.4401 or 1.4571) upon request. "To meet the stringent requirements of the food industry, the quality of deburring and surface finishing is crucial when processing stainless steel components. The very pronounced edge rounding on Eberhardt's sheet metal components presents a particular challenge. This is precisely the right task for our newly developed HERO deburring discs," says Marc Böck, Managing Director of boeck GmbH, with a degree in engineering and business administration.

And rightly so: „Previously, we had to deburr and edge-round the sheet metal in a time-consuming manual process that required a significant amount of manpower. With the HERO tools on our WEBER grinding and deburring machine, we achieve the extreme edge rounding required for our components – and in record time. This saves us up to 80 percent of the process time,“ explains Kevin Eberhardt, Production Manager at Eberhardt GmbH, enthusiastically. „When you process 1,500 tons of stainless steel sheet annually, that’s enormous. We can now deploy four employees who were previously solely responsible for deburring and edge rounding more effectively elsewhere.“

Technological leap thanks to a novel structure

Why are HERO tools so powerful? The key to the new deburring discs is their extremely high abrasive density combined with the exceptional flexibility of the abrasive material. To achieve this, boeck developed a new arrangement and slot structure for the abrasive flaps. This increases the active abrasive material many times over, thereby also boosting the performance potential of deburring machines. This result is no accident, as the expert team led by engineers Marc and Jochen Böck is passionately dedicated to developing and producing customized tooling solutions for sheet metal deburring – from slag removal and pre-grinding to deburring, edge rounding, oxide removal, and surface finishing.

To optimally cover a wide range of applications, HERO deburring discs, like most boeck products, are available with various abrasive materials. The Brown Edition is the all-rounder and therefore suitable for all types of sheet metal. For more aggressive deburring, the Blue Edition is required. Compared to the standard material, the abrasive cloth achieves a higher material removal rate at the sheet metal edges, resulting in a pronounced edge rounding. The Grey Edition is particularly effective for processing components made of aluminum and plastic and also ensures a glossy surface finish on the workpieces.

In addition to the high-quality tools, the extensive testing and expert advice from boeck also ensure excellent results in deburring and edge rounding.

Tools for all applications

Eberhardt also relies on boeck tools for less demanding tasks. Marc Böck explains: „If a slight edge rounding is required on the stainless steel components, they are processed in Lichtenau using our QUICK deburring discs in the PROFESSIONAL version. They are well-suited for removing light primary and secondary burrs as well as rounding sheet metal components. Thanks to their double-row design, they contain more abrasive material and offer a more consistent pressure distribution compared to other deburring discs.“

Depending on the workpiece range and the desired deburring or rounding result, boeck offers various versions of the QUICK deburring discs. For example, there is a standard version for all sheet metal types, different versions for heavy edge rounding and surface roughening, versions for aluminum and plastic processing, and special versions for wet processing. boeck also offers QUICK tools for deburring external edges and sheet metal with small recesses and holes.

For primary burr removal, Eberhardt also uses abrasive belts from boeck. In addition to different grit sizes, users can choose from various abrasives in these belts. Whether for universal use or aggressive yet cool grinding, for a fine finish with high cutting ability or high material removal at low operating temperatures, long service life and good surface quality – there's a suitable option for every requirement.

More than just a tool supplier

Boeck's service extends far beyond simply supplying tools. "We always strive to find the best solution for our customers, advising them not only on selecting the right tools but also providing support and guidance, for example, on setting up the respective machine. Only with the correct parameters can the full potential of our tools be realized, resulting in increased productivity and efficiency for the user," explains Marc Böck. Boeck draws on many years of experience and expertise. Not only do they develop customized tooling solutions, but the tools are also manufactured on specially designed, highly automated machines.

This also convinced Eberhardt: „Whether by phone or on-site – the experts at boeck advise us quickly, easily, and always with great competence. In addition, the extensive testing with boeck tools ensures outstanding results in deburring and edge rounding. And that's not all: Short response and delivery times, as well as the excellent price-performance ratio of the tools, round off the service package offered by boeck GmbH,“ agree Kevin and Ralf Eberhardt.
