50 percent processing time saved

Interior fittings and air conditioning units for railway technology, ceiling elements for operating rooms, curved guide plates and Air delivery systems for printing presses — how simple sheet metal components are transformed into highly complex parts is the specialty of KWM Karl Weisshaar Ing. GmbH. To process the sheet metal precisely and economically, the Mosbach-based company relies on a modern, automated machine park. High-quality tools for deburring and edge rounding are supplied by boeck GmbH from Leipheim.

From engineering and sheet metal fabrication to joining and welding technology, assembly, and logistics – everything from a single source – KWM Karl Weisshaar Ing. GmbH is an expert in metal and sheet metal processing across the entire process chain. This all-rounder and problem solver in the field of sheet metal, with a team of nearly 500 employees, is a recognized partner to many industries, including printing presses, automotive, food processing, rail vehicle manufacturing, general mechanical engineering, cleanroom technology, and medical technology. The company processes over 5,000 tons of sheet metal made of steel, stainless steel, and aluminum annually into sometimes highly complex components. It goes without saying that, alongside efficient processes, the highest quality is a top priority.

Partners for more efficient processes (from left): Dipl.Ing. (FH) Dipl.-Kfm. (FH) Marc Böck, Managing Director of boeck GmbH, Hans Schuster, Master Laser Technology and CNC Punching Technology at KWM Weisshaar, and Jürgen Braun, Foreman Grinding and Deburring at KWM Weisshaar.

Quality tools for sheet metal experts

Deburring and edge rounding are crucial steps in the process chain at KWM, given the high demands of manufacturing various components. They optimally prepare the laser-cut sheets for further processing. The Mosbach-based company uses, among other things, an automated FLADDER GYR0/300 deburring machine for this purpose. In this grinding technology, six grinding spindles rotate in opposite pairs and simultaneously oscillate across the workpiece.

„"Thanks to this combination, the workpiece is processed continuously and evenly from changing positions, with virtually no damage to the surface. This enables clean deburring and rounding of sheet metal parts — but only with the right tools."“, according to Hans Schuster, master of laser technology and CNC punching technology at KWM Karl Weisshaar Ing. GmbH. „For some time now, we have been using the high-quality deburring tools from boeck GmbH — not only for our FLADDER deburring machine.“

The innovative company from Leipheim is managed by engineers Marc and Jochen Böck. The brothers and their team of experts develop and produce customized tooling solutions for sheet metal deburring with passion and dedication—from slag removal and pre-grinding to deburring, edge rounding, oxide removal, and surface finishing. "We manufacture our tools on our own highly automated, in-house developed machines. Thanks to our structured, high-performance processes, we can not only guarantee the highest quality but also deliver customized solutions quickly. Almost all orders are shipped the same day," says Marc Böck, Managing Director of boeck GmbH.
By arranging the lamellae in the grinding or deburring direction, KWM achieves a stronger edge rounding than with the previously used tools.

Increased edge rounding while simultaneously reducing processing time

Specifically for use on FLADDER deburring machines—as well as other machine types—boeck offers a range of tools. On the FLADDER machine, KWM Weisshaar uses deburring rollers with a diameter of 400 mm, a width of 250 mm, and a mounting bore of 200 mm, achieving excellent results. Hans Schuster: „"The deburring rollers offer excellent performance—and at an optimal price-performance ratio. We achieve significantly greater edge rounding with them than with the tools we used previously."“, “That’s what Hans Schuster said. Jürgen Braun, foreman for grinding and deburring at KWM Karl Weisshaar Ing. GmbH, is also enthusiastic: „Previously, we had to run the sheets through our FLADDER deburring machine four times to achieve sufficient edge rounding; now it only takes two. This saves 50 percent of our processing time!“

But what makes these deburring rollers so special? The individual abrasive cloth flaps are cut contact-free using a laser. This prevents grain loss in the abrasive cloth, as can occur, for example, during stamping. boeck deburring rollers have a very high abrasive cloth content. Furthermore, the flaps are arranged in the grinding or deburring direction and can be worn down to the core diameter. This results in long service life. Despite the high abrasive cloth density, the deburring rollers are very lightweight. „"This simplifies handling when changing tools."“, “That’s another quality feature,” adds Jürgen Braun. “The deburring rollers are manufactured from a single piece without segmentation, making them very stable. For smooth running, they are also balanced to a G6.3 grade.”.

Different versions for different requirements

Depending on the workpiece range and desired result, the user can choose between different types of abrasive cloth at boeck. Hans Schuster: „"The standard 'Brown Edition' is perfect for our needs. This all-rounder is suitable for all types of sheet metal. This allows us to process workpieces that vary depending on the order without having to change the tools."‚ In addition, boeck offers other variants: Edges on components made of aluminum and plastic are best rounded with the "Grey Edition," for example. Those requiring very high material removal rates or a strong edge rounding should opt for the "Purple Edition.".

All variants are available with different slot patterns, specially developed by boeck, to meet various requirements. Depending on the slot pattern, higher contact pressure and longer service life are achieved. boeck also offers suitable solutions for rounding the edges of small cutouts and drill holes, or for situations where the lamellae should initially appear less aggressive.

Despite the higher proportion of abrasive fabric, boeck's deburring rollers are very lightweight. This reduces the bearing load in the machine.

Partnership for Innovation

To achieve ever greater time, quality, and cost advantages for its customers, KWM Weisshaar embraces new technologies. This has led to a very special partnership between the two companies: „"KWM Weisshaar, and especially Hans Schuster and Jürgen Braun, are always interested in new products. With their very large, modern machinery for grinding and deburring, the company is able to thoroughly test our abrasives before they are used. At KWM, we receive constructive feedback within a very short time."“, according to Marc Böck.

Hans Schuster also sees boeck as more than just a simple tool supplier.„The company is more of an innovative development partner, helping us to make our grinding, deburring, and oxide removal processes even more efficient. We are happy to test boeck's innovative product ideas for their suitability in everyday use and have already had many positive experiences with them.“
