boeck visits real sheet metal workers: Metal construction & metal design Benjamin & Daniel Loth GbR

Deburring is a crucial step in metal processing. However, few possess in-depth knowledge of this specialized area. It's advantageous to have experts on your side who can advise you throughout the entire deburring process chain and help you optimize it. To overcome the challenges of deburring plasma-cut sheet metal parts, the metal construction and design company Benjamin & Daniel Loth GbR sought a strong partner and found one in boeck GmbH. The sheet metal deburring experts supported the metalworkers in modernizing their ERNST grinding and deburring machine, advised them on selecting the correct settings, and supplied the necessary high-performance tools. The results speak for themselves.
As the name suggests, Benjamin & Daniel Loth GbR, a metal construction and design company, focuses entirely on metal. Whether structural steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, or aluminum – this young metal construction firm utilizes a wide range of techniques, from forging, cutting, welding, and bending to drilling and turning, to produce custom, high-quality pieces for both business and private clients. With a small but highly efficient team, they manufacture garden gates, railings, stairs, fences, mailboxes, gravestones, and much more. Their secret to success: skilled craftsmanship combined with traditional and modern manufacturing methods.

The consultation makes the difference
For sheet metal cutting, the Loth brothers also use their own plasma cutting system: „With our system, we can cut structural steel up to 40 mm thick and stainless steel up to 35 mm thick. For larger dimensions, we rely on the expertise of partner companies,“ says Benjamin Loth, master metalworker and managing director of Metallbau & Metallgestaltung Benjamin & Daniel Loth GbR. „To deliver the highest quality to our customers, deburring and edge rounding of the cut sheet metal parts are always part of our standard procedure. However, doing this manually is strenuous, time-consuming, and ties up employees who could be more productively employed in other tasks. That's why we purchased an older grinding and deburring machine from ERNST and completely overhauled it.“

During the modernization project, the metalworkers received consulting support from boeck GmbH. This innovative company from Leipheim specializes in sheet metal deburring. The team, led by engineers Marc and Jochen Böck, passionately develops and produces customized tooling solutions for slag removal, pre-grinding, deburring, edge rounding, oxide removal, and surface finishing, and possesses extensive experience in each individual process step. „Oxygen and plasma cutting often produce very large burrs. This requires high-performance deburring tools and robust machines. Furthermore, the technology must be able to compensate for distortion and thickness tolerances in the sheet metal parts. The wet-operating ERNST grinding and deburring machine is perfectly suited to the requirements of Benjamin & Daniel Loth GbR. When the system needed to be refurbished, we supported Loth from the outset in selecting the right tools and advised them on the necessary setting parameters, such as cutting and feed speeds, so that the installation of the replacement or new parts could be optimally aligned with the company's needs,“ says Marc Böck, Managing Director of boeck GmbH.
Benjamin Loth: „Boeck is more than just a supplier of deburring tools. Thanks to their expert advice, we have a problem solver for all our sheet metal deburring needs. We need such a strong partner, especially for our wet grinding and deburring machine. Of course, we also pay particular attention to the performance of the tools. We've never been disappointed with Boeck in that regard.“
Deburring rollers that inspire
Boeck manufactures its tools on its own highly automated, in-house developed machines. With structured, high-performance processes, the Leipheim-based company ensures top quality and short delivery times. Users will find customized solutions here, such as deburring rollers, abrasive cloth belts, and abrasive fleece belts for all ERNST deburring machines – and many other manufacturers. Boeck's goal is always to optimize processes for its customers in terms of cost, quality, and time. Loth uses deburring rollers for deburring and edge rounding, which Boeck developed specifically for wet-working machines. "The deburring rollers offer excellent performance – especially in wet machining. This was particularly important to us. Compared to other tools, we achieve better material removal rates and longer service life," says Benjamin Loth.
High performance in wet machining is made possible by a novel, laser-cut abrasive material. The special cuts of the flaps seal the edges, preventing water from penetrating them. Additionally, a high abrasive density and complete wear of the flaps down to the core diameter extend the tool's service life. Another quality feature: the deburring rollers are manufactured from a single piece without segmentation, resulting in exceptional stability. A balancing grade of G 6.3 ensures smooth running.

Maximum material removal rate
„The contactless laser cutting process also eliminates grain loss in the abrasive cloth, unlike what occurs with punching, for example. Furthermore, the abrasive cloth flaps are arranged in the grinding and deburring direction. This allows for greater edge rounding. Ideal for Loth's requirements,“ adds Marc Böck. High material removal rates and strong edge rounding are essential for removing the large burrs on plasma-cut sheet metal parts. That's why Loth uses boeck's „Purple Edition.“ It boasts the highest aggressiveness of all the different types of abrasives. Benjamin Loth explains: „We achieve outstanding results with the deburring rollers of the ‚Purple Edition.‘ The material removal rate is particularly impressive – even with our wet deburring machine. Moreover, we benefit from an optimal price-performance ratio.“
In addition to the "Purple Edition," boeck offers other types of abrasive cloth: The "Brown Edition" is a versatile option for all types of sheet metal – even with a varying range of workpieces. The "Grey Edition" is the right choice for edge rounding on aluminum and plastic components.
All variants are available with different slot patterns, specially developed by boeck, to meet various requirements. Depending on the slot pattern, higher contact pressure and longer service life are achieved. A suitable solution is also available for rounding the edges of small cutouts and bores, or for situations where the lamellae should initially appear less aggressive.
From start to finish – everything from one source
Loth also performs the final finishing touches on the ERNST grinding and deburring machine: To remove any remaining scratches and give the sheet metal parts a brilliant surface finish, Benjamin and Daniel Loth rely on abrasive cloth and non-woven belts from boeck. "boeck provided us with excellent advice during this process step as well. We are very satisfied. Thanks to the different grit sizes and qualities, boeck always has the right finishing tool on hand," says Benjamin Loth. boeck also keeps a large stock of abrasive cloth and non-woven belts for other grinding and deburring machines, enabling them to respond quickly. Whether abrasive cloth belts, deburring rollers, or other tools – almost all orders are shipped the same day.
„The collaboration with boeck is characterized by a sense of unity. We have a strong partner who provides us with optimal advice across the entire process chain and supplies us with state-of-the-art tools. This allows us to achieve long service lives and consistently high performance for our processes,“ says Benjamin Loth.
